Starting February 9, we will no longer support free access to the Twitter API, both v2 and v1.1.
A paid basic tier will be available instead

Twitter data are among the world’s most powerful data sets.
We’re committed to enabling fast & comprehensive access so you can continue to build with us.
We’ll be back with more details on what you can expect next week.
Thanks Musk
They give a 1 month notice. The bot creators and researchers are impacted the most

They made their API an unreasonably expensively paid service unless they have massive bulk discounts for high volume API calls.
Probably going to negatively affect engagement as many of the third party clients did absolutely basic things like allowing people to sort their timeline by their actual personal preference and not some bot-botched algorithmically weighted shit smear.

twitter have been pretty open in the fact that they are against third parties and want twitter to be used as they intend it to be used

That is their prerogative.
Users have also been vocal about how they want the choice to sort their timelines in the classic fashion - chronologically, thus why many users started using third party apps, services and browser extensions in the first place, that is their prerogative.
I'm expecting Twitter to go the way of Myspace by the end of 2025, tech locally still there but irrelevant.
