Not too long ago I was with a friend chilling and he was playing this game collection called .hack GU/Last Recode which had a few games in one and its what inspired me to make this post because that game feels like its 75% cutscene and is basically a movie. The title is click bait because I do not believe that cutscenes are actually bad for gaming but I got you to click so it worked so here's my case, cutscenes in games love to stop the flow of a game with pre-rendered eye candy that distracts from the core of the game and messes the pacing a whole lot I feel the same way about incessant tutorials. This often turns some games into absolute slogs because you're being jostled between cutscene all the time and you're watching more movie than game instead of being in the character. Games with excessive cutscene or tutorial are also annoying to replay because only about 40-50% of games have skippable cutscenes in my experience even then you shouldn't have to skip the game's content just so you don't have to die of boredom. A big part of why the valve (singleplayer) games are so good is because of their void of cutscenes. Of course I do recognize that they have their place in the industry and can be used to good effect in games (in-engine cutscenes >) but they do not tickle my tip and I see them as a general negative if not a little crutchy in the gaming industry but I would like to hear others on this.
