How exactly does the pecking order and behavior work with chickens you raise? If one of the males gets too aggressive with the others, you are always forced to put him down?
depends on the chicken
as for the pecking order: it's natural and it's exactly what they would do in the wild. some roosters look at a bigger roo and know that because of size they stand no chance so they don't bother. boo is well aware he is second to blonky. he is fine with that arrangement and doesn't challenge.
bandit, despite her size, will absolutely go after full-size hens if they disrespect her.
pip is about the same size as blonky.
i simply had too many roosters at the moment because i hate putting them down, watching them try to fight with the ones i have had since day one made me make the choice to put them down. i have put down 4 the past 2 days and i expect little buddy to pass soon
blonky, boo, honey, pip, spare and little buddy are left. now that spare is lower on the tier than he used to be he is becoming about as cuddly as little buddy is. i think i may just keep a tiny pocket roo around no matter flock size just for funsies

simply put: up until last week i had 12 roosters and unless you have like 100 hens and several coops to keep them in that is an unnecessary amount of cock. that many overmate with the hens and tear up their feathers, stress out the hens from the near constant male attention and it's too much. i'm gonna get like, 8-10 more hens n with the flock being mixed with bantams n the coop size everything should be fine

but yeh it's kind of a shame nobody wants excess roosters. i'd love to set up a rooster resort animal shelter some day. they are more showy and just beautiful boys but it's not feasible at the moment to do that

I think you mentioned before you grew up near a farm and had prior experience in raising them. I would see chickens occasionally outside my backyard but they never came close to the fence, unlike the turkey who would puff up and strut around.

i lived at a place that had chickens when i was 6, hardly a lot there to remember
in high school my mom n i grew crops tho and i remember a lot more about that

the chickens were an impulsive decision brought on by my likely having adhd and i ran with it and it forces a more structured schedule in my life and it's beneficial
they have absolutely made my life better. their poop makes for great fertilizer/compost and this weekend ima till n get some spring crops in the ground and their poop is gonna be there assisting in the process. any excess crops/food grown i can recycle right back to them, including their own eggshells

pip and artemis are doing fine in their coop and i can rotate around where they stay at, their clawing motions and grazing and pooping will prep wherever i choose to grow stuff at naturally
i just need to fence the area in so blonky and pip don't go to war again.

but yeh, chickens are hella sustainable for small homestead/farm operations. i'm never going back

Reminds me of 2nd grade when we had a class garden and I grew beets. We had a small garden on the side of our house with strawberries but the birds kept getting into them.

took today off to handle business
this morning i went to let the chickens out and mercury stayed in the coop... she wasn't making broody sounds or anything, so i was a little confused. she then went missing for several hours, scaring the hell out of me, and returned around night-time. turns out, since artemis and mercury are the only cochin hens and honey, the black frizzle, is a cochin, they're "his type"
the other roos aren't picky about who they bang, but honey is all about that cochin ass and since i moved artemis over to the pip coop, he turned his attention over to the milf
i have now put mercury over in the pip coop, not specifically for stepson chicken porn purposes, but because i don't want to put honey down and if he runs my favorite chicken off again that is exactly what i am going to do
while searching for mercury, my man dug under a small nook near the side of the house the hoe cat will sometimes hide her kittens in and found... an empty egg, that looks a lot like the type jane used to lay... mystery kind of solved?
20240226_152251.jpg

i have planted the spring crops:
3 rows of carrots, 2 rows of string beans, 2 rows of cauliflower, a row of spinach, 2 rows of mustard greens, and some varieties of bok choy

the baby potatoes are sprouting
20240226_164639.jpg

as are the onions
20240226_164650.jpg

found some kale from the fall crop planting that got hid under that stupid fucking tree debris
20240226_164713.jpg

the flowers are coming back up and blooming too
20240226_164809.jpg

bought 2 baby rose bushes. they're cute

@minty
so i decided to grow some frost grapes
issue is i don't think there's enough cold left in winter to put the seeds in the dirt to like make them trigger whatever they need from sitting in cold asf dirt for 4 months
have you tried growing seeds that need this? if so, what alternative process would you recommend for these kinds of seeds?
google says it's "stratification" but i can't find a "set in stone" process

okay so i had never heard of frost grapes before but from looking around at some sources (google kept trying to recommend normal grapes and how to protect them from frost :rage: ) stratification, if regular cold is unavailable, involves putting them in wet peat with some vermiculite and putting them in a plastic bag and then throwing them in the crisper drawer in your fridge until they sprout, and even then you may be possibly waiting for up to a year. but if you are successful these are some sturdy, hardy, low maintenance plants it seems. so i guess set an alarm on a calendar and check on 'em once a month til somethin' green sprouts

what sneed says is true buuuuut i mean blonky fought three roosters n won. then the following day, one of the roos that lost got a lucky pin on him because he only had one match to recover from
both are almost fully healed btw.

A beautiful boy! Not to change the subject somewhat, but my 9 and 5 year olds enjoy watching this. Again, my 9 year old son's favorite is the silkie and my 5 year old son's is the Silver Laced Polish lmao

oh wow that is a lot of cock
:rimshot:
i would love to own a lot of land where i could have some of them jersey giants, myself
g58f1znwwpc61.jpg

silkies are muppets and adorable, one thing about them tho is that because their feathers are floofy they don't repel water the way other bird feathers do (neither do owls, iirc) so when it rains you have to blow dry or towel them off
silver laced birds are always gorgeous. and polish got the crazy hair that's a solid chicken choice
altho according to our polish culture professor @chuj polish chicken breed is seemingly not actually from poland

I read 5-10, but the way minty babies and cares for them, I can see them living longer as long as they don't duke it out with one another.
Point is, Blonky has a long career left to go
That belt may be Pip's, but he'll be taking it back soon enough

I bet Minty runs underground virtual cock fights on the Dark Web.

That or she may be supplying terrorists with eggs.

Like over in Europe, it's clear that farmers are the enemy of human civilization. Why else would governments be at war with them all a sudden?
