depends on the chickenHow exactly does the pecking order and behavior work with chickens you raise? If one of the males gets too aggressive with the others, you are always forced to put him down?
as for the pecking order: it's natural and it's exactly what they would do in the wild. some roosters look at a bigger roo and know that because of size they stand no chance so they don't bother. boo is well aware he is second to blonky. he is fine with that arrangement and doesn't challenge.
bandit, despite her size, will absolutely go after full-size hens if they disrespect her.
pip is about the same size as blonky.
i simply had too many roosters at the moment because i hate putting them down, watching them try to fight with the ones i have had since day one made me make the choice to put them down. i have put down 4 the past 2 days and i expect little buddy to pass soon
blonky, boo, honey, pip, spare and little buddy are left. now that spare is lower on the tier than he used to be he is becoming about as cuddly as little buddy is. i think i may just keep a tiny pocket roo around no matter flock size just for funsies
simply put: up until last week i had 12 roosters and unless you have like 100 hens and several coops to keep them in that is an unnecessary amount of cock. that many overmate with the hens and tear up their feathers, stress out the hens from the near constant male attention and it's too much. i'm gonna get like, 8-10 more hens n with the flock being mixed with bantams n the coop size everything should be fine
but yeh it's kind of a shame nobody wants excess roosters. i'd love to set up a rooster resort animal shelter some day. they are more showy and just beautiful boys but it's not feasible at the moment to do that
